Rochester Music Guild 2009 Scholarship Competition

 

When:    Saturday, February 7, 2009 (note: This competition date is a change from the previously announced date due to a conflict with MN High School state solo/ensemble competition)

 

Where:   First Presbyterian Church

                  512 Third Street SW; Rochester

 

Scholarships to be awarded in each division:

 

First Place              $500

 

Second Place          $400

 

Third Place             $300

 

Eligibility:

 

All young musicians in grades 8 to 12 who live within a 50-mile radius of Rochester may compete.  Applicants who have won first place twice in the same category are ineligible to compete in that category.

Georgia Daniel Memorial STRINGS Division

 

Carl Schroedel Memorial WINDS Division*

Carter Douglas Memorial PIANO Master Class Division

 

Voice, Strings, and Winds divisions:

 

Students will perform in a closed audition.  The judge will allow 10 minutes performance time and may offer suggestions and comments if time permits.  Students will receive written comments.

 

Piano master class division only:  

 

Students will perform in an open audition setting.  In each 20 minute audition, the judge will allow 10 minutes performance time and 10 minutes to work with each student, offering positive suggestions and comments.  Interested observers are invited to sit in and listen.  Winners will be determined at the end of the day based on students’ initial performances.  Students will receive written comments.

 

For all students:  Ten minutes of time in a warm-up room will be allocated to each student not more than one half hour before the scheduled audition time. Students may choose to use the assigned time or not as they prefer.

 

Requirements:

 

  • Student must perform two compositions contrasting in style and period with total performance time not to exceed 10 minutes.
  • Student should not cut any part of a composition to remain within time limit. The judge has the discretion to stop the performance at any point, but the student should be prepared to play the entire piece.
  • ALL music must be memorized.
  • Student must supply an original score of the music being performed with measures numbered.
  • Student must supply own accompanist.

 

Application Deadline:  January 20, 2009

Registration Fee:  $25 for each division entered

 

Winners will be announced to students by e-mail on Sunday, February 8.

Comment sheets will be mailed the week following the competition.

A Winners Recital will be held Sunday, February 15 at 2 pm at First Presbyterian Church.
