Rochester Music Guild – Scholarship Competition

ABOUT THE COMPETITION

The annual Rochester Music Guild Scholarship Competition serves as a platform for music excellence. It aims to develop the performing skills of musicians in the Rochester area, to improve musical standards and to identify potential music talents by providing the opportunity for young musicians to perform in a competitive situation.

 

JUNIOR DIVISION

Piano, Strings:  Grades 7-9

 

SENIOR DIVISION

Piano, Strings:  Grades 10-12

Voice, Winds:  Grades 8-12

Junior Division (Piano, Strings):  Friday, February 5, 2010:  5:00-8:00 pm

Senior Division (Piano):  Saturday, February 6, 2010:  2:00-8:00 pm

Senior Division (Strings, Voice, Winds):  Saturday, February 6, 2010:  10:00 am – 4:00 pm

Piano:  Petit Music – 115 Lafayette Ave SW, Eyota, MN 55934 …new location, as of Feb 1, 2010

Strings, Voice, Winds:  First Presbyterian Church – 512 Third Street SW, Rochester

 

ELIGIBILITY

All young musicians who live within a 50-mile radius of Rochester may compete.  Applicants who have won first place in any category are ineligible to compete in that same category.  In subsequent years applicants may compete in the Senior Division even if they won first place in the Junior Division.

 

Junior Division (Piano, Strings)

Open to musicians in grades 7 to 9.

 

Senior Division (Piano, Strings)

Open to musicians in grades 10 to 12.

 

Senior Division (Voice, Winds)

Open to musicians in grades 8 to 12.

VOICE, STRINGS, AND WINDS

Students will perform in a closed audition.  20 minutes will be allowed for each audition and students will receive written comments.

 

PIANO MASTER CLASS ONLY

Students will perform in an open audition (master class) setting.  Interested observers are invited to sit in and listen.  20 minutes will be allowed for each audition and students will receive written comments.

 

For all students:  Ten minutes of time in a warm-up room will be allocated to each student not more than one half hour before the scheduled audition time. Students may choose to use the assigned time or not as they prefer.

 

REQUIREMENTS

  • Student must perform two compositions contrasting in style and period with total performance time not to exceed 10 minutes.
  • Student should not cut any part of a composition to remain within time limit.  If time limit is in danger of being exceeded, the judge will indicate when the performer should stop.  The student should be prepared to play the entire piece.
  • ALL music must be memorized.
  • Student must supply an original score of the music being performed with measures numbered.
  • Student must supply own accompanist.

 

WINNERS RECITAL

A Winners Recital will be held Sunday, February 14, 2010 at 2 pm at First Presbyterian Church.

 

Winners will be announced to students by e-mail (date tbd).

Comment sheets will be mailed the week following the competition.
